College Betting on Sports

College betting on sports can be a serious earner for sports enthusiasts. There are a few reasons for this. College sports involve hundreds of teams and it isn't always easy for sportsbooks to stay 'clued up' on all of them. Another reason is that because of the number of teams, there is a huge volume of games which means that bet turnover remains high.

Currently there are 117 Division 1 NCAA football teams and 347 Division 1 NCAA basketbal teams and hundreds more in the lower divisions - that makes for a lot of games and therefore a much better chance of some 'soft lines' (lines, totals, or spreads that are off the mark therefore offering value) or even outright errors.

To look at a handicapping process for college betting, you might want to look at the teams from each region and seed them yourself. You may of course come across the same problems as some sportsbooks, in that you do not yet have a handle on the teams, but attempt to give them some kind of value in terms of seeding. You can always wait until match lines are posted and wait to see how the 'unknown' team stacks up against others that you have seeded.

Seedings are useful because you may find a No.5 team that you feel should be seeded No.12 or vice versa. This can help greatly when establishing your own line when these teams are involved in match-ups against other teams.

During 'March Madness', the climax of the NCAA basketball season and essentially a 'college betting event' in itself, there would be a number of things to consider, some of which might extend to regular season games and indeed other college games like NCAA football. These would be:

1. Don't get caught up in the hype.
2. Don't play too many games. Stick to games where you have a genuine edge.
3. Don't play on teams or in conferences with which you are not familiar.
4. Expect upsets and surprises (especially in 'events' like NCAAB March Madness).
5. Spot the improving teams and those teams falling off the pace.
6. Watch for teams playing at unfamiliar venues.
7. Travel factors.
8. Between match rest duration.
9. Experience, coach and team.
10. In 'one-off' games (rather than game series') win or lose, underdogs can often hold their own.

Eventually you will develop a strategy for finding winners for different college betting scenarios, just remember, nothing stays the same for long in the big leagues and competitions. But don't disregard year to year trends altogether as the same or at least similar college betting patterns do re-emerge.
