Monday Night Football
This is only going to be a short article but it will dispel a popular monday night football myth.
A lot of sports bettors believe that NFL teams that play on Monday night, perform worse than normal in their next game on
the following Sunday, due to having one less rest day.
Whenever a Monday night team loses on a subsequent Sunday, you can just hear them in homes, stadia and bars around the country:
"Yep Joe, I told you so..the guys are still bushed from Monday..."
Well, it's a real crime making all those players on contracts
worth millions of dollars, play a game after only six days off!
Over the short term these types of theory can of course stand up, but the proof, as with most things, is in longer term trends.
USA Today once did a study where over 490 Monday night games were analysed - the break down was as follows:
Total winning Monday night teams = 244.
139 won their next game.
102 lost their next game.
3 tied their next game.
Total losing Monday night teams = 244.
126 won their next game.
117 lost their next game.
1 tied their next game.
Total Tying Monday night teams = 6.
5 won their next game.
1 lost their next game.
As you can see the Monday night
NFL teams don't struggle in their next games over the long term. If anything, they
appear to do better, but even if you want to discount that as statistical deviation, they certainly don't
do worse.
The study was done many years ago now, it would be interesting to take a nother sample involving later NFL seasons.
