NFL Under Over Betting (Totals / Over Unders)
Totals or 'over / unders' (or indeed under overs) are sometimes the "forgotten line" in terms of NFL betting, and yet, with a public obsessed
with pointspreads, the totals market is often where some of the decent value lies.
Many people won't remember but the total line used to be offered at -120 rather than -110 as standard, such was the
concern by many sportsbooks that it was a line that could be beaten more easily than others. There is also the argument that bookmakers do not over-advertise the totals market, again perhaps because it is not as lucrative for them as other sports markets.
Ultimately because totals are not a hugely popular market, the over / under number set by the sportsbook can be
quite volatile during the week in the lead up to a game, especially if weather conditions in the area in which the game is being played are not settled. Weather can have a big impact on total scores.
Just as in
pointspread betting where there are key pointspreads to take account of, there are also key numbers in NFL
over under betting. More games end in a total of 37 than any other total. So the difference in betting a game to go over 36.5 instead of over 37.5, for example, is a big one.
Take a look at the NFL under over markets with some of our recommended bookmakers. Analyse team defences and offenses
as well as managerial style. Don't forget to keep track of the weather, not just windy or wet conditions but also
temperature and 'warm weather' teams that are having to play a game in much colder or freezing conditions. Also know
your 'dome' games as it stands to reason that the weather will have little impact on games being played inside a dome
stadium!
