Why Sports Bettors Can Win

As a professional sports bettor, one shouldn't get upset by the ignorant masses who automatically assume that anyone who bets on sports is a 'loser'. Let them think that. The professional knows that he is simply an investor - he is as concerned with profit and return on investment as much as any guy in the City or on Wall Street. There is no difference in principle. The market may be different but in the end he is simply trading in a commodity and that commodity just happens to be sports events.

The good sports bettor knows that he can find value in sports lines and can therefore win. A sports line set by a sportsbook may not necessarily reflect the teams chances of winning because the line is set to divide public opinion. Since 98% of the betting public are amateurs, the line that is set to divide that opinion will not necessarily be 'correct'.

In the end, the professional grade sports bettor is pitting his judgment not against the bookmaker but against the mass betting public. The big bookmakers with high volume and large numbers of customers simply don't care if you win or lose - they pretty much balance the action on both teams in a game and win whatever the outcome through their commission, in the form of vigorish or biased book percentages. Smaller bookmakers may sometimes find that they have to bet into their own lines with their own money because they receive an imbalance of action due to lower volume and a smaller customer base.

So if sports lines and pointspreads are set to divide opinion, not to reflect the sportsbooks view of the likely outcome of a game, then the line can be beaten. Also consider that the betting customer can decide not to bet on a game, where the sportsbooks do not have that luxury and have to post lines on every game, even if they feel they might be laying themselves open to risk because e.g. certain information regarding players, coaches or situations may not yet be confirmed.

So we have established that the line can be beaten and can be beaten consistently. It isn't easy, but if you adhere to basic principles, understand that you will have to endure loss as well as enjoy profit, then there is no reason why you can't set out to beat the sports line.
