NFL Super Bowl Betting

Super Bowl XL was contested by the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks, with the Steelers finally coming out on top 21-10. Pittsburgh struggled in the first twenty minutes, unable to get going and depite taking that long to get their first 'first down' they went in at the half leading 7-3.

The Seahawks, who led the NFL in scoring during the regular season, could muster only one touchdown in the final game and missed two long field goals, even though they dominated most of the first half. Yet the Seahawks could not cash in their dominance for points. They should perhaps have been given a touchdown that was ruled out on a penalty flag - but did not really play well enough to deserve victory on that basis alone.

The Steeler's Super Bowl champion status is all the more incredible when you think they nearly missed the playoffs completeley, after a three game losing streak took them down to 7-5. But the Steelers rallied to win their last four regular season games to scrape into the post season as the sixth and final seed in the AFC. Pittsburgh won three playoff games on the road, a feat never before accomplished.

Strangely Shaun Alexander and Jerome Bettis were subdued for much of the game and ultimately it was big plays by 'Fast' Willie Parker, Hines Ward and Ben Roethlisberger himself that killed off the Seahawks.

So Seattle fail to win a Super Bowl. But they are in good company - these teams (at time of writing) have still not won a Super Bowl:

Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, and the Seattle Seahawks.

There are also six teams who still have not been to a Super Bowl final:

Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals.

Note the real hard luck story of the Buffalo Bills who went to the Super Bowl four years in a row, from 1991 to 1994, but lost in every one.

So next up is Super Bowl XLI, but with a lot of action to take place between now and then! See our lines on our Super Bowl betting page.
